Boryeong Mud Festival Summer 2009

It's been really nice to travel to so many different places throughout S.Korea this year. Within almost 2 years I have been able to see what this country has to offer.
In this post, I bring to you the Boryeong Mud Festival. Located on Daecheon beach which is just outside Boryeong city on the West Sea (Yellow Sea). It's a week long event that attracts many westerners (foreigners as they like to call us) and uses local mud which is full of health-giving minerals. A great excuse to go play in the mud....

It was a rainy weekend, not to mention muddy ;) luckily i brought my trusty Olympus waterproof/shockproof camera. This came in handy. The Nikon D80 stayed it's it's case.

just arrived after a 4.5 hour bus ride from Bundang. above is the entrance way into Daecheon beach.....and we're excited to see what's happening....first part of the plan is to find a place to stay, then change and get muddy. :) Which all hot spots in Korea jack their summer rates up...we stayed in a average motel....usually 30,000W per night, but not this weekend. 150,000W

amusment park gate at Daecheon beach..

No time to waste, my friend Eun-jung and I immediately found the action....

I couldn't believe the amount of people....i thought to come here last year, but never made it happen. definitely worth checking out if you are ever in Korea in the middle of July!!

the beach area...

some girls mud wrestling....nice action shot!

not sure if i would want to get in there....due to a few serious competitors

this event drew a big crowd....what is it about watching average people wrestle in the mud?!?

these two kiddos taking more of the traditional korean wrestling techniques....that is grabbing the belts (in this case, shorts) and try to take the opponent down....

eun-jung washing her hands off in the West Sea to take some pictures...

hell yeah!

super fun time....the mud does make your skin feel good.....maybe this is how asians keep there skin so young and soft looking.

wow....look at the people, glad to see everyone relaxing and having FUN and letting go!!

the mud super slides....the line was a bit too long....oh well!

This guy "Mr. T" ...was taking down by a S.Korean....sumo-like wrestler!

tried to capture the mascot, but failed! :(

check out the umbrella.....pink flowers....not mine, but Eun-jung's

the stage, ready for tonight's opening ceremony....we were standing for about an hour, but it was worth the wait....despite the rain, everybody enjoyed the celebrities and fireworks...

traditional korean drumming to start off the night's ceremony

just a small part of the crowd

amazing firework show that must of went on for a least 20 minutes, non-stop...could be one of the best shows i've seen....

people, umbrellas, wet beach, west sea, fireworks....spectacular!

then more performances.....even in the down-pour.
Above is one of Korea's popular female singers....Jang-Yun Jeong
Look closely to see the sheet of rain...

we had a good spot....as you can see the umbrellas are out....

Jang-Yun Jeong on the big screen....

next up was an older guy....definitely popular....Song-Dae Kwan

his close-up....

and then the highlight...."Girls Generation" one of Korea's top girl pop groups....called "So Nyeo Si Dae" 9 girls.....

as the rain was fallin' the crowd was going wild! hehehehahaha :)

lots of drunk and happy westerns!!

the following day...Sunday....was super windy and rainy...late morning nothing was really happening....we checked out of the motel and walked around.....

just a bit windy... ;)

late Saturday night we found "the" food stand! tasty indian food.... YUM! so we decided to hit it up for lunch before heading to the bus station and on to Bundang...

sweet lassi for 10ooW, can't pass that up!

the kabob was good....but today we decided to go with the set which had tandori chicken, naan, including some tasty sides

interesting jelly fish...part of the amusement park..

waiting for the bus to Boryeong station....

what a fun weekend adventure !!! :D

Well...it's Friday and tonight Luca and I are off for a weekend of kayaking...the rainy season is here and we are excited to kayak some new creeks, possibly even a First D (Descent) YAHOO!

Stay-tuned for some whitewater action.....

Ciao!
